Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 September 2025 launched the Gyan Bharatam Portal, a landmark digital initiative for the digitisation, preservation, and public access of India’s vast manuscript heritage. The launch took place at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, during the International Conference on Gyan Bharatam, organised by the Union Ministry of Culture.

The portal will serve as a national digital repository, featuring AI-driven tools for search, translation, and annotation. It also aims to promote research, training, public participation, and global collaboration in manuscript preservation.

With over 1,100 scholars and experts attending the three-day conference, the event highlighted India’s efforts to safeguard its ancient knowledge traditions. Modi emphasised that the initiative will not only conserve fragile manuscripts but also integrate traditional wisdom with modern education, supporting the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

India, home to one of the largest collections of manuscripts globally, sees this project as a bridge between the past and the future, reaffirming its role as the custodian of ancient wisdom in the digital age.
