On April 15th, the night was shattered by gunfire in Uttar Pradesh leading to the demise of Atiq Ahmed, a well- known criminal with over a hundred cases against him cases over 44 years.
Accompanied by his brother, Ashraf Ahmed, Atiq was walking and conversing with reporters during a medical checkup in Prayagraj when a single gunshot to the head claimed his chaos ensured as
Ashraf was also shot dead before he could react.
Eyewitness accounts and video evidence confirmed that multiple shots were fired. This tragic event occurred just a day after Atiq’s son, Asad, was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi. Asad, along with Ghulam Hussain, was accused of firing at advocate Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of Raju Pal, a former MLA of the Bahujan Samaj Party,(BSP), and two police guards in Prayagraj on February 24th.
Asad, a thirdyear law student in a private college in Lucknow, and Hussain were on the run, with a bounty of Rs 5 lakh each on their heads.
CM Yogi Adityanath lauded the UP Special Task Force (STF) for their efforts in bringing the killers to justice in Asad come upon. A meeting was held to discuss law and order, during which the STF and law enforcement officials were commended for their bravery and dedication.
The events surrounding the deaths of the Ahmeds have created shock waves across Uttar Pradesh, leading the Chief Minister to order a highlevel investigation into the shooting that claimed Atiq and Ashraf’s lives.
To prevent further violence, large gatherings have been banned across all districts of Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, a three member judicial commission has been set up to look into the matter further.
