India Celebrates 150 Years of Vande Mataram — The Eternal Song of the Nation

November 7, 2025, marks 150 years since Vande Mataram — India’s revered National Song — was first published. Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875 and later set to music by Rabindranath Tagore, this timeless hymn has inspired generations, symbolizing India’s unity, devotion, and patriotic spirit.

Originally published in Bangadarshan and immortalized in Anandamath (1882), Vande Mataram evolved from a literary masterpiece into the soul of India’s freedom movement. It was first sung at the Indian National Congress session in 1896, becoming the anthem of resistance during the Swadeshi Movement. Despite colonial bans, the cry of “Vande Mataram!” echoed across the nation, uniting people of all regions and faiths.

The song’s impact transcended borders — from Madam Bhikaji Cama’s tricolour in Stuttgart (1907) to Madan Lal Dhingra’s last words in London (1909). It became a global symbol of India’s awakening.

On 24 January 1950, the Constituent Assembly gave Vande Mataram equal honor with the National Anthem, recognizing its historic role in India’s freedom struggle.

To commemorate this sesquicentennial milestone, the Government of India has planned grand celebrations — from nationwide events and musical renditions to global cultural showcases and tree plantation drives under “Vande Mataram: Salute to Mother Earth.”

Vande Mataram remains not just a song, but the living heartbeat of India — a hymn of freedom, faith, and eternal love for the Motherland.
