From Cricket Captain to Cabinet Leader: Mohammad Azharuddin Gets Key Telangana Portfolios

Mohammad Azharuddin Entrusted With Key Portfolios in Telangana Cabinet
On November 4, 2025, former India cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin was officially allotted two major portfolios in the Telangana State Government — Minorities Welfare and Public Enterprises. The allocations were confirmed through a government notification signed by Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao and approved by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma.

Azharuddin’s induction into the cabinet on October 31 followed a nomination to the Legislative Council, fulfilling eligibility conditions for ministerial office. The two portfolios he now heads were previously managed by other senior officials—Minorities Welfare by Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar and Public Enterprises directly by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

His appointment carries political significance, as Azharuddin becomes the sole Muslim minister in the cabinet and his elevation comes ahead of the upcoming per-election in the politically sensitive Jubilee Hills constituency.

Supporters believe the former ace cricketer will bring fresh energy to his new departments, while critics warn of representation concerns and timing amid electoral strategy debates.
