In a significant move to strengthen internal security, the Union Government has launched India’s first-ever national weapons database to track lost, looted, and recovered government firearms. The initiative aims to curb terrorism, organised crime, and extremism by preventing official weapons from falling into illegal hands.
The ‘Lost, Looted and Recovered Firearm’ database was dedicated to the nation by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Anti-Terror Conference 2025, organised by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Developed and hosted by the NIA under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the digital platform enables real-time tracking and information sharing among authorised law enforcement agencies.
The database records details of government-owned firearms belonging to state police and Central Armed Police Forces that are lost, stolen, looted, or recovered. It integrates inputs from all states and Union Territories, including sensitive regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East, and Naxal-affected areas.
Security officials believe the centralised repository will significantly enhance investigations, improve inter-agency coordination, and help dismantle terror and criminal networks that misuse stolen weapons. The initiative reflects the Centre’s broader push towards technology-driven, intelligence-led policing to safeguard national security.
