On January 6, 2026, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant virtually inaugurated India’s first fully paperless district court in Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala, marking a historic leap in the digital transformation of India’s judiciary.
This pioneering court operates with completely electronic judicial processes, covering everything from online case filing to digitally signed final judgments. Developed in-house by the Kerala High Court, the system integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist judges in case analysis, document management, and summary generation.
Key features include AI-powered case summaries, voice-to-text dictation, digital annotations, transcript automation, and a centralized digital platform for all proceedings. The system significantly reduces clerical delays, minimizes physical court visits, lowers litigation costs, and eliminates the need for paper-based file storage.
This milestone enhances judicial efficiency, accessibility, and environmental sustainability, offering faster case resolution, reduced backlog, and improved access to justice for citizens—setting a benchmark for the future of digital courts in India.
