India’s Startup India Movement marked a significant milestone as it completed ten years on National Startup Day, January 16. Launched in 2016, the initiative has transformed India into one of the world’s leading startup hubs by nurturing innovation, supporting entrepreneurs and strengthening the business ecosystem.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while commemorating the occasion, highlighted how reforms, policy support and the energy of young entrepreneurs have reshaped India’s economic landscape. Over the decade, simplified regulations, digital public infrastructure and sector-specific reforms have opened new opportunities, especially in emerging areas like space, defence and deep technology.
Today, more than 2 lakh startups are officially recognized under Startup India, operating across sectors such as fintech, health-tech, ed-tech, agritech and clean energy. The movement has not only generated employment and driven technology-led growth but has also promoted regional entrepreneurship beyond major cities.
Aligned with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Startup India has encouraged indigenous innovation and reduced import dependence. As the movement enters its next decade, it continues to play a vital role in building a self-reliant, innovation-driven and globally competitive India.
