A new competitor to ChatGPT has emerged, named Moshi, developed by the French startup Kyutai. This AI voice assistant distinguishes itself by its ability to understand and respond to the tone of a user’s voice, offering real-time interaction with a range of emotions and speaking styles. Unlike ChatGPT’s current voice mode, Moshi can operate locally and offline, making it a potentially valuable tool for smart home devices and other applications that require rapid response times.
Moshi’s development has been rapid, taking just four months to build, and the team behind it plans to open-source the model to encourage further innovation and enhancement from the AI community. While it still has some kinks to work out, such as maintaining coherence in longer conversations, Moshi represents a significant step forward in voice AI technology and a noteworthy challenge to OpenAI’s offerings.
