The International Space Station (ISS) has embraced artificial intelligence with the integration of advanced AI-powered robots to support astronauts during long-duration missions. Leading this innovation is Cimon (Crew Interactive MObile companioN), a voice-activated assistant developed by Airbus, IBM, and the German Space Agency.

Cimon provides hands-free aid by displaying instructions, answering queries, and recording tasks, helping reduce crew errors and workload. Complementing Cimon are Astrobee robots—Bumble, Honey, and Queen—cube-shaped helpers developed under NASA’s Game Changing Development program. These autonomous bots assist in inventory management, environmental monitoring, and maintenance tasks.

Beyond technical assistance, Cimon also serves as a social companion, helping ease psychological stress during isolated missions. The success of these AI tools sets the stage for their expanded role in future space exploration, including Moon and Mars missions.

As AI continues to evolve, its applications in space could also influence innovation in healthcare, education, and industry back on Earth.
