India’s Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) is set to complete the delivery of 6.01 lakh AK-203 rifles by December 2030, nearly 22 months ahead of schedule. Valued at ₹5,200 crore, this project strengthens India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The AK-203, a modern Kalashnikov assault rifle, is designed for Indian troops deployed in sensitive areas like the LoC and LAC. With a 15,000-round service life, each rifle involves 120 manufacturing processes and over 180 sub-parts.
Currently, 48,000 rifles have been delivered, with production set to increase to 1.5 lakh rifles per year. The AK-203 will eventually replace the INSAS rifles, marking a major upgrade for India’s armed forces.
IRRPL, located in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, is a joint venture between Indian defence PSUs and Russian firms. The facility employs 260+ workers, including Russian experts, and ensures indigenous production with full quality control.
This initiative is a key step under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, making India a manufacturing hub for modern military equipment.
