Bajrang Setu: A Modern Marvel Over the Ganga in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, the spiritual capital of India, is set to welcome a new architectural landmark — the Bajrang Setu, a modern suspension bridge over the Ganga River. Expected to open by December 2025, the bridge will replace the historic Laxman Jhula, which was closed in 2019 due to safety concerns after nearly a century of service.

A New Era After Laxman Jhula

Built in 1929, the Laxman Jhula was an enduring symbol of Rishikesh’s spiritual and tourist identity. However, structural wear and overuse led to its closure. To maintain connectivity and preserve the city’s cultural flow, the government initiated construction of the Bajrang Setu downstream in 2022, following a detailed DPR prepared in 2020.

Design & Features

The Bajrang Setu blends modern engineering with aesthetic appeal and spiritual reverence.

  • Length: 132 m | Width: 8 m
  • Cost: ₹60 crore
  • Deck: 5 m steel roadway for two-wheelers
  • Walkways:5 m glass paths on both sides (66 mm thick)
The transparent walkways will offer breathtaking views of the Ganga, making it a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors.

Construction Update

According to PWD Executive Engineer Praveen Karnwal, nearly 90% of the construction is complete, with only glass panel installation pending. The project is slated for completion by December 2025, after which it will be handed over to the district administration.

Safety & Sustainability

Engineered with high-grade materials, earthquake-resistant design, and strong suspension cables, the Bajrang Setu promises durability and safety for both pedestrians and vehicles. It will help decongest existing routes and ensure long-term structural resilience.

Tourism & Economic Impact

Tourism experts predict that Bajrang Setu will become a major attraction, drawing travelers from across India and abroad. The glass walkways and panoramic views will enhance Rishikesh’s reputation as the “Gateway to the Himalayas.” The bridge is also expected to stimulate local businesses, cafes, and tourism services.

Cultural & Environmental Harmony

Beyond its architectural brilliance, Bajrang Setu honors the spiritual and mythological legacy of Rishikesh. Built with eco-friendly measures to minimize environmental impact, it symbolizes a perfect blend of tradition, technology, and sustainability.

When inaugurated, Bajrang Setu will stand not only as a bridge across the Ganga — but as a bridge between heritage and modern India.
