In a remarkable engineering achievement, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has built the world’s highest motorable road at an altitude of 19,400 feet above sea level in Ladakh, setting a new world record. Constructed under Project Himank, the road passes through Mig La Pass, surpassing the previous record held by BRO’s Umling La Pass road (19,024 ft) built in 2021.
The Likaru–Mig La–Fukche road marks a critical milestone in India’s push to strengthen border connectivity and strategic infrastructure. The project holds immense military significance, providing faster access and deployment routes near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). It also promises to open new avenues for tourism and regional development in Ladakh’s remote high-altitude regions.
Led by Brigadier Vishal Srivastava, the BRO team faced extreme weather, low oxygen levels, and rugged terrain to complete this feat. The successful construction underscores India’s engineering prowess and resilience in some of the harshest environments on Earth.
With this achievement, the BRO once again cements its global reputation for high-altitude construction excellence — combining national security, infrastructure advancement, and adventure tourism potential in one monumental project.
