CISF Launches First All-Women Commando Unit in 2025

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has introduced its first all-women commando unit in 2025, marking a historic step towards gender parity in India’s security forces.

Currently undergoing intensive training at the Regional Training Centre in Barwaha, Madhya Pradesh, 30 women personnel are being equipped for specialised counter-terrorist operations through an eight-week advanced programme. The training includes weapons handling, rappelling, survival drills, and a 48-hour confidence-building module that tests teamwork and decision-making under simulated hostile conditions.

Once deployed, these women commandos will join Quick Reaction Teams (QRT) and Special Task Forces (STF) at high-security installations such as airports, metro systems, and sensitive government or private sector sites.

Women presently make up about 8% of CISF’s workforce. With plans to recruit 2,400 more by 2026, the force aims to reach 10% representation. The introduction of an all-women commando unit reflects a policy shift that recognises women’s capabilities in frontline and high-risk roles.

As the first central armed police force in India to establish such a wing, CISF sets a precedent for greater female inclusion in specialised security operations, strengthening both operational readiness and gender equality.
