Costa Rica Launches Snake Identification App to Improve Safety and Save Lives

Costa Rica has launched a free mobile application to help people accurately identify venomous snakes and respond safely during encounters. Developed by Universidad de Costa Rica through its Clodomiro Picado Institute, the app aims to reduce panic, prevent snakebite risks, and protect wildlife.

Available on both Android and iOS, the ICP App helps users identify 25 venomous snake species found in Costa Rica, while also offering side-by-side comparisons with commonly confused non-venomous snakes. It provides science-backed information, clear images, and practical first-aid guidance for snakebite emergencies—especially useful in remote or forested areas.

The initiative addresses a long-standing problem of misidentification that often leads to fear-driven killing of harmless snakes. By offering reliable, expert-verified data in an easy-to-use format, the app promotes coexistence, improves public awareness, and supports faster, more informed medical responses when snake encounters occur.
