Cyclone Ditwah Intensifies Over Bay of Bengal; IMD Issues Alerts for South India

A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is rapidly intensifying into Cyclone Ditwah, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue warnings for heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas across southern India. The system—currently moving near the Sri Lanka coast at about 17 kmph—is expected to become a cyclonic storm within hours.

According to IMD’s latest update, the cyclone is projected to move north-northwest, heading toward North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next two days. Forecasts warn of intense rainfall, coastal storms, and high sea waves, triggering concerns of localized flooding and disruption.

Authorities have advised fishermen to stay away from the sea until the storm passes. Coastal administrations are mobilising emergency teams, preparing for possible evacuations, and monitoring sea conditions closely.

Residents in the affected regions are urged to follow official advisories, stay indoors when possible, and avoid travel during the peak impact period — a prudent step as Cyclone Ditwah approaches.
