Democracy at the Doorstep: Home Voting in Telangana’s 2023 Elections

Telangana launched a household voting system for the 2023 elections in a special effort to ensure inclusiveness and transparency in its electoral process, this special scheme was especially designed to benefit senior citizens eighty and disabled, a major event in the electoral practices of India A visit was arranged to the literacy officers. This allowed them to vote without having to travel to polling places.

The introduction of this scheme in Telangana has received an overwhelmingly positive response from voters, especially in areas like Bupalapally and Rangareddy. In Hyderabad alone, more than 850 electors availed this form of home voting. Thousands of ballots were received from absentee voters in 33 states. The success of this initiative in increasing voter participation was particularly notable among populations that had traditionally had difficulty accessing polling places.

Telangana’s pioneering work has set a new benchmark for an inclusive and accessible electoral system across India. Its practicality and subsequent rise in votes has led other states, including Rajasthan, to adopt similar household voting systems.

In all, more than 9,000 voters exercised house elections in Telangana. The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) informed that the process will continue till the 27th of the month, as 9,174 postal ballots have already been received. Of these, 6,226 were voters over the age of 80, and 2,884 physically challenged individuals also participated in household elections.
