DRDO Develops Portable Desalination Device for Soldiers

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a portable water desalination device to provide safe drinking water to soldiers deployed in remote and water-scarce regions. The system is designed to support troops operating in challenging environments such as coastal areas, high-altitude regions, and saline inland zones.

Named the Sea Water Desalination System (SWaDeS), the device has been developed by DRDO’s Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur. It can operate in both manual and engine-driven modes, offering flexibility during field operations. The system is suitable for naval deployments and inland locations like Pangong Tso in Ladakh, where access to potable water is limited.

The lightweight manual version can be carried by a single soldier and can meet the drinking water needs of 10–12 personnel during long patrols or emergency situations. The engine-operated variant can treat highly saline water and supply safe drinking water for up to 25 soldiers.

SWaDeS adds to DRDO’s extensive portfolio of water purification technologies, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing operational readiness and water security for the armed forces.
