EC Delists 474 Inactive Political Parties to Ensure Transparency

In a major clean-up drive, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has de-listed 474 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) for failing to comply with electoral and financial regulations. With this, the total number of parties removed in just two months has reached 808, significantly cutting down dormant political outfits.

Why the Action?

  1. Inactivity in Elections – Parties had not contested polls for six consecutive years, violating Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
  2. Lack of Transparency – 359 parties also failed to submit audited financial reports for the last three years.

Due Process

State CEOs have been asked to issue notices and conduct hearings, ensuring a fair chance before final delisting.

Impact

  • Reduces misuse of party registration for tax evasion or money laundering.
  • Improves monitoring of active political entities.
  • Enhances credibility of elections by retaining only genuine parties.

The Bigger Picture

With upcoming State and Lok Sabha elections, the ECI aims to strengthen electoral integrity and public trust. This move reminds political outfits that regular participation and financial accountability are non-negotiable.
