Dr. A.S. BR Ambedkar’s achievements are many, including appointment as India’s first law minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet, the posthumous honor of receiving the Bharat Ratna award in 1990 and India’s highest civilian honor Born April 14, 1891 in Madhya Pradesh as the fourteenth child of his father and mother. Ambedkar faced discrimination from all sections of society because of his relations belonging to the Hindu Mahar caste, a group considered “untouchable” up to the upper classes. His father Ramji became a Subedar in the Indian Army stationed at Mhow Cantonment in Madhya Pradesh.
Despite studying in a military academy run with the help of British officers, discrimination and stigma were the main reasons why Dr. A.K. Ambedkar was with him everywhere and enrolled in the prestigious Elphinstone College in Mumbai in 1908, where he received a monthly stipend of twenty-five rupees from Sayajirao, the Gaikwad ruler of Baroda. Ambedkar obtained his diploma in Political Science and Economics from Bombay University in 1912, after which he went to study in America
