GHMC council meeting concludes amidst ruckus

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s 9th ordinary meeting concluded abruptly on Saturday afternoon amidst ruckus in the house. Notably, none of the items on the agenda were discussed.

Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi who recently switched to Congress from BRS, received flack from the corporators of the latter party. Members demanded her resignation and held placards while registering their protest. Deputy Mayor Srilatha Shoban Reddy was also on the receiving end for defecting to the ruling party.

Corporators from BRS and BJP gathered around the Mayor’s podium and raised slogans, while those from Congress raised counter-slogans defending the mayor. After adjourning the house two times, the mayor without any discussion announced that the resolutions had been passed and the meeting concluded.

Explaining the substandard state of water supply, members demanded the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) managing director be present in the meeting. To which, GHMC Commissioner Amrapali Kata responded that the MD was ill with viral fever. The house members also paid condolences to the late Secunderabad Cantonment MLA Laasya Nanditha.

BJP and BRS corporators demanded the HMWSSB MD Ashok Reddy to be present at the house meeting. While the Commissioner Amrapali Kata tried to explain that the MD was on leave as he is suffering from viral fever, corporators continued to create ruckus.

Meanwhile, when the BRS corporators accused the Mayor of being a turncoat she alleged that the party forced her to make that move. “You don’t have any subject to talk on, because of which you are creating ruckus. Do you know the rules,” she asked the corporators in a harsh tone.
