Global Powers Ramp Up Defense Against China Cyber Threats

Citing security concerns over cybersecurity, the US and UK are working together to strengthen their response to the threat posed by Chinese hackers believed to target critical systems and engage in cyber espionage.

The joint operation reflects a larger warning about state-sponsored cyber operations linked to China and represents an increase in cyber defenses against threats.

Microsoft played an important role in revealing the depth of cyber attacks, especially with the operation called Volt Typhoon. The technology company announced that government-backed Chinese hackers have infiltrated communications critical to US infrastructure since mid-2021 for long-term exploitation.

Their goal is to hinder critical communications between the United States and Asia in times of crisis. Sectors affected by these cyber attacks include communication, production, energy, transportation, etc. is located.

In response, Microsoft joined cybersecurity organizations in the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom in warning that these spying operations could attract international attention and demonstrate the effectiveness of these attacks and their significant impact on threats.

With these efforts, the European Union decided to suspend sanctions against foreign hackers from China, Russiaand North Korea. The order expands the EU’s ability to impose asset freezes and travel bans on individuals and groups involved in cyber-attacks that threaten the EU or its member states.

This update reflects the EU’s commitment to combating cyber threats and the impact of major cyber incidents in recent years, including high-profile ransomware attacks and chain attacks that became the EU’s first cyber sanctions.
