Narendra Modi has hailed the Great Nicobar Island Project as a landmark step to turn Great Nicobar Island into a major maritime and air connectivity hub in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Valued at ₹72,000 crore and spanning 30 years, the multi-phase project aims to boost infrastructure, trade, and maritime security.

Key Features

  • International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) with 14.2 million TEU capacity
  • Greenfield International Airport for civilian and military use
  • 450 MVA gas-solar power plant
  • New township on 16,610 hectares

Strategically located near Indira Point, less than 150 km from Indonesia, the project enhances India’s security presence and curbs illegal maritime activities.

Balancing Ecology and Economy
Despite concerns about forest loss, biodiversity, and impacts on tribes like the Shompen and Nicobarese, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav assured that safeguards are in place, including conservation zones, earthquake-resistant construction, and renewable energy integration.

This project reflects India’s vision of combining economic growth with ecological protection, aligning with its goal of a Viksit Bharat 2047.
