India’s First Green Hydrogen Plant Launched at Kandla Port

In a major step towards clean energy, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has commissioned India’s first indigenously built green hydrogen plant at Kandla, Gujarat. Inaugurated by Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the 1MW facility marks a historic milestone in India’s maritime decarbonization efforts.

Set up in just four months, this Make in India initiative is the first green hydrogen project at any Indian port. Initially, it will power 11 buses and streetlights within the port, with future plans to fuel all port operations.

The plant is part of a larger 10MW project, with 5MW capacity to be added by fiscal-end and full capacity expected by mid-next year. Once complete, it will produce 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Laid by PM Modi in May 2025, the project showcases India’s commitment to sustainability, setting a benchmark for renewable energy in the maritime sector.
