Heat Anxiety 2025: Rising Temperatures, Rising Mental Health Concerns

With rising global temperatures and frequent heatwaves, heat anxiety has become a growing mental health concern, especially in India and other low- and middle-income countries. The condition involves psychological stress triggered by extreme heat, often leading to symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, irritability, and sleep disturbances.

Vulnerable groups such as adolescents, the elderly, and people with existing mental health issues are most affected. Urban areas, due to the heat island effect, face intensified risks. Experts warn that the mental health burden in India could increase by 23% in 2025 due to climate-related stress.

India’s healthcare system, already facing an 80% treatment gap, is struggling to address the rising number of anxiety and mood disorder cases during heatwaves. Addressing heat anxiety requires climate-sensitive health strategies, better awareness, and stronger mental health support.
