On the 193rd start anniversary of Fatima Sheikh, India honors a real icon in its records, recognizing her fantastic contributions to schooling and social change. Born on January nine, 1831, she stands tall as India’s first Muslim lady teacher, boldly challenging societal norms of her generation.

Fatima Sheikh partnered with esteemed social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, dedicating her life to breaking the shackles imposed via the caste gadget. Despite fierce opposition, she tirelessly championed schooling, mainly for marginalized businesses like girls and youngsters.

Her collaboration with Savitribai Phule in organising faculties became a cornerstone for training a number of the underprivileged. As the primary pupil of Phule’s college, Fatima Sheikh performed a pivotal role in advocating for girls’ education, confronting caste discrimination, and fostering social reform in nineteenth-century Maharashtra.

But her path become laden with challenges. Facing hostility from each top-caste Hindus and orthodox Muslims, she fearlessly promoted schooling amongst Dalit, Adivasi, and Muslim communities. Her unwavering stance against the ancient denial of education by means of the dominant Brahmin caste solidified her legacy as a courageous activist.

Fatima Sheikh’s pivotal second arrived while she supported Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule throughout their eviction for setting up the primary college for Dalit kids and ladies in 1848. With her brother Usman Sheikh, they provided sanctuary and a place for education, enduring assaults and condemnation from society.

Her determination went beyond coaching; she actively engaged with households, encouraging ladies’ education and furthering Phule’s assignment. Her unwavering dedication kept the torch of schooling burning, providing valuable guide to Savitribai and the Satyashodhak movement—a movement aimed toward looking for truth, championed by means of Jyotirao Phule.

Savitribai Phule expressed immense admiration and love for Fatima Sheikh in her letters to Jyotirao Phule, highlighting her determination and crucial position in their motive.
