IAF Tejas Fighter Crashes at Dubai Air Show, Pilot Killed in Rare Accident

An Indian Air Force Tejas Light Combat Aircraft crashed during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show, resulting in the pilot’s death and marking only the second crash in the jet’s 24-year history. The incident, witnessed by thousands at the global aviation event, has renewed scrutiny of the fighter’s safety record and development trajectory.

Accident During Aerobatic Display
The crash occurred around 2:15 pm local time as the Tejas performed low-altitude aerobatics. Eyewitness videos captured the aircraft abruptly pitching downward before exploding on impact. Emergency teams reached the site immediately, but the pilot could not be saved. The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry to investigate the cause.

Possible Link to Negative-G Manoeuvre
Early indications suggest the jet failed to recover from a negative G-force manoeuvre. While Tejas is certified for such aerobatics, experts note that negative G can momentarily impair pilot control by altering blood flow and response time. Recovery precision is especially critical during public display routines.

Tejas’ First Crash in 2024
The only previous Tejas crash occurred in March 2024 near Jaisalmer during a routine training sortie. In that incident, the pilot safely ejected using the aircraft’s zero-zero ejection seat. Officials reaffirmed the fighter’s overall strong safety record following the inquiry.

The Dubai accident has prompted renewed debate on display flying protocols and the continued evolution of India’s indigenous combat aircraft program.
