India Inaugurates First Bamboo-Based Bioethanol Plant in Assam

India has inaugurated its first bamboo-based bioethanol plant in Golaghat, Assam, marking a major step in the nation’s green energy and industrial growth journey. The plant will source bamboo from Assam and the Northeast, providing a boost to local farmers and tribal communities. Alongside this, the foundation for a polypropylene plant was also laid to strengthen regional manufacturing.

Why It Matters

Bioethanol, a renewable fuel made from biomass, offers a cleaner and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. The new facility will process about 5 lakh tonnes of bamboo annually, supporting India’s target to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

Policy Support

Earlier restrictions on bamboo cutting under the Indian Forest Act, 1927, limited its use. Recent amendments removed bamboo from the “tree” category, empowering farmers to grow and sell it legally—opening new economic opportunities for rural communities.

Economic Impact

The project is expected to inject ₹200 crore into Assam’s rural economy while creating jobs and supporting ‘Make in Assam’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. With bamboo as a key feedstock, this development promises to strengthen rural livelihoods and promote renewable energy adoption.

India’s Energy Transition

This milestone highlights India’s diversification into biofuels, complementing its strong push in solar and wind power. The bamboo bioethanol plant underscores the country’s commitment to energy security, sustainability, and rural development.
