India Expands Fortified Rice Scheme to Combat Anaemia under Anemia Mukt Bharat

The Government of India has expanded the supply of fortified rice across food safety net programmes as part of the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) initiative. By March 2024, fortified rice was rolled out nationwide, with the Union Cabinet approving its continuation until December 2028, backed by ₹17,082 crore funding.

Combating Micronutrient Deficiencies

AMB, launched in 2018, aims to reduce anaemia by providing foods enriched with iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Fortified rice, piloted in 2019, now plays a key role in boosting haemoglobin levels and supporting overall health.

Wide Reach Through Safety Net Programmes

Under schemes like the Public Distribution System (PDS) and PM POSHAN (school meals), fortified rice replaces normal rice, ensuring access to nutrient-rich food. Complementary fortified products such as double fortified salt (DFS) and edible oils with vitamins A & D further strengthen nutrition support.

Focus on Children and Women

School meals under PM POSHAN integrate fortified rice to improve cognitive development and learning outcomes. Women and adolescent girls benefit through special nutrition programmes aimed at reducing anaemia and improving health.

Additional Nutrition Efforts

The dairy sector contributes via the NDDB’s Gift Milk initiative, which has provided fortified milk to over 41,000 children across 11 states. Meanwhile, food processing schemes like PM Kisan SAMPADA Yojana boost infrastructure, reduce food waste, and enhance nutrition security.

With these measures, India moves closer to tackling malnutrition and building a healthier, more productive workforce.
