In response to the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah in late November 2025, India swiftly launched Operation Sagar Bandhu, a humanitarian mission to provide emergency relief to Sri Lanka. The cyclone caused floods, landslides, widespread destruction, and over 50 casualties, leaving thousands displaced and essential services disrupted.
Under the operation, INS Vikrant and INS Udaygiri were deployed to Colombo, carrying essential supplies including food, medicine, and emergency kits for affected communities. The mission, announced by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, reflects India’s commitment to the “Neighbourhood First” policy and regional solidarity in times of crisis.
Operation Sagar Bandhu underscores India’s dedication to rapid disaster response, maritime cooperation, and humanitarian assistance, ensuring timely support for its neighbouring nations in emergencies.
