India has emerged as the third-largest renewable energy market in the world in 2025, marking a major milestone in its clean energy transition. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India added about 45 GW of renewable energy capacity in a single year, driven mainly by solar and wind power.
Key Highlights of India’s Renewable Growth
India’s total installed renewable energy capacity reached around 250.5 GW in 2025, up sharply from 175.9 GW in 2023. This rapid expansion reflects the country’s strong push to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and meet long-term climate and energy security goals.
Solar Leads the Transition
Solar energy has been the biggest contributor, with 37 GW added in 2025, making India the second-largest solar energy expander globally after China. Rapid solar deployment across Asia has been a key driver of renewable growth, with India at the forefront.
Wind and Hydropower Expansion
Other renewable sources are also gaining momentum. Wind energy capacity increased by 6.3 GW in 2025, while hydropower capacity rose from 52 GW in 2024 to 56 GW in 2025. Pumped hydro storage also expanded significantly, from 4.7 GW to 7.2 GW, strengthening grid stability.
India in the Global Context
Globally, renewable energy capacity stood at 5,149 GW in 2025, with 692 GW added in a single year, accounting for 49.4% of total power capacity worldwide. India’s strong performance highlights its growing role as a key player in the global clean energy transition.
Overall, India’s renewable energy surge not only boosts energy security but also reinforces its commitment to sustainable development and climate action amid global uncertainty.
