In a landmark achievement, the Government of India, in collaboration with the Godrej Industries Group, has successfully repatriated the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha. These ancient relics, dating back to the 3rd century BCE and discovered in 1898 in Uttar Pradesh, are believed to be linked directly to the mortal remains of Lord Buddha.
Originally set for auction in Hong Kong in May 2025, the relics were saved through swift diplomatic intervention by the Ministry of Culture. This move underscores India’s commitment to preserving its cultural and spiritual heritage.
Minister of Culture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in enabling this historic repatriation through effective cultural diplomacy. Godrej Industries also played a vital role, exemplifying how corporate partnerships can support heritage conservation.
The return of the relics is a significant moment for India’s global cultural standing and a symbol of its role as a guardian of world heritage. The relics will soon be displayed publicly, allowing devotees and visitors to pay tribute to the timeless message of peace and compassion taught by Lord Buddha.
