India Achieves Major Breakthrough in TB Fight: WHO Report Shows Record Decline

India has achieved a historic milestone in public health, with the WHO Global TB Report 2025 confirming a 21% decline in tuberculosis incidence, nearly double the global average. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed this as a decisive step toward a TB-Mukt Bharat, praising the nation’s rapid progress and community-driven efforts.

According to the report, TB cases fell from 237 to 187 per lakh between 2015 and 2024. TB deaths also dropped significantly, and treatment coverage has reached 92%, one of the highest worldwide. India has drastically reduced missing TB cases—from 15 lakh to under 1 lakh—and achieved a 90% treatment success rate.

The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched in December 2024, played a crucial role by screening crores of vulnerable people, deploying AI-based X-ray devices, and expanding molecular diagnostic labs. India now boasts the world’s largest TB testing network with over 9,000 molecular labs, 107 advanced culture labs, and hundreds of AI-enabled portable X-ray units.

Massive public participation strengthened the mission: over 6.77 lakh Ni-kshay Mitras and youth volunteers helped provide nutrition support and community care, while patients received enhanced financial aid through the Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana.

With personalized treatment models, strengthened primary health infrastructure, and tech-integrated care, India is moving rapidly toward eliminating TB—years ahead of the global SDG deadline.

India’s success signals a transformative shift from disease control to disease elimination.
