India Becomes World’s Third Largest Metro Network

India has emerged as the third-largest metro network in the world, marking a major milestone in urban transport development. According to Union Minister Tokhan Sahu, the country now operates over 1,143 km of metro lines, with nearly 936 km under construction.

The expansion has been rapid, growing from just five cities in 2014 to 29 cities today. This transformation highlights India’s strong focus on improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting efficient public transport systems. The metro network now serves around 11.5 million passengers daily, becoming a backbone of urban transportation.

A key contributor to this growth is the Delhi Metro, which has set benchmarks in efficiency, punctuality, and safety since its launch in 2002. It continues to serve as a model for metro systems across the country.

The expansion has been driven by sustained government support, beginning during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and accelerating under Narendra Modi. With a focus on sustainable infrastructure and connectivity, India’s metro growth reflects its commitment to modern, eco-friendly urban transport solutions.
