India’s Coal Imports Fall 16.4% in July 2025 Amid Weak Demand

India’s coal imports fell by 16.4% in July 2025, totaling 21.08 million tonnes (MT) compared to 25.23 MT in July 2024, according to data from mjunction services. The decline is largely due to weak industrial and power demand during the monsoon season and high coal stock levels at power plants and industries.

While non-coking coal imports (used for power generation) dropped sharply to 11.54 MT from 16.52 MT, coking coal imports (used in steelmaking) rose to 5.85 MT from 4.81 MT, reflecting steady activity in the steel sector.

For the April–July 2025 period, total coal imports stood at 97.49 MT, lower than 100.48 MT in the same period last year. The trend highlights reduced dependence on imported thermal coal but sustained demand for coking coal in heavy industries.

Experts suggest demand may rise again during the festive season starting late September.
