PM Modi Inaugurates India’s first Underwater Metro in Kolkata

India’s first underwater metro tunnel inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata, West Bengal.

This project shows a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development.

The metro tunnel is part of Kolkata’s East-West Metro corridor, which links Howrah Maidan with Esplanade.

The India’s first Underwater Metro train uses Automatic Train Operation (ATO).

  • This underwater metro is 16.6 km long, with about 10.8 km running underground from Howrah Maidan to Phoolbagan.
  • The tunnel covers a 520-meter stretch under the river in just 45 seconds.This Stretching over 4.8 km, one section will connect Howrah and Salt Lake.
  • It is the deepest metro in the country.

Two parallel tunnels will connect the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata on either side of the Hooghly by the end of July.

The Prime Minister laid foundation stones for several significant national projects, including the Taratala-Majerhat and the Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro sections in Kolkata.

He also laid the foundation stone for the extension of the Pune Metro station between Pimpri Chinchwad and Nigdi.

Prime Minister Modi took the first metro ride from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan with school students. Modi interacted and had fun with them.

PM Modi also interacted with the metro staff while riding on the train.

Bengal’s Leader Suvendu Adhikari  and State BJP President Sukanta Majumder and were with PM Narendra Modi.
