Israel Becomes First Country to Officially Recognise Somaliland

In a landmark diplomatic development, Israel has officially recognised Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The decision marks a major shift in Horn of Africa geopolitics and carries significant implications for regional stability and international law.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has functioned for over three decades with its own government, currency, security forces, and democratic institutions. Despite this de facto independence, it had remained unrecognised internationally until Israel’s announcement.

The recognition was formalised through a joint declaration signed by Israeli leaders and the President of Somaliland. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the move as consistent with the spirit of the Abraham Accords, emphasising Israel’s willingness to engage with new partners based on shared interests, stability, and mutual recognition.

As part of the agreement, Israel and Somaliland committed to cooperation in areas such as diplomacy, trade, security, technology, and regional development. The move is expected to reshape diplomatic calculations in the Horn of Africa, a strategically important region linking Africa, the Middle East, and major global trade routes.

Israel’s recognition may encourage renewed international debate on Somaliland’s status and could influence how questions of self-determination, sovereignty, and recognition are addressed in the future.
