Jharkhand has made history by launching India’s first mining tourism project, aimed at blending industrial heritage with eco-tourism. The state government, in collaboration with Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), signed a five-year MoU to promote this innovative venture.
In its pilot phase, the North Urimari open-cast mine in Ramgarh will host guided tours, allowing visitors to safely observe live mining operations. The initiative includes two circuits — Rajrappa and Patratu — integrating mining experiences with natural and cultural sites like Patratu Valley and Chinnamastika Temple. Tour packages are priced between ₹2,500 and ₹2,800 (plus GST) and operate twice weekly.
Inspired by global models like Barcelona’s Gava Mining Museum, the project highlights Jharkhand’s mineral richness and aims to boost educational tourism, local employment, and environmental awareness. With plans to expand to other mining regions and companies, this model sets a precedent for responsible tourism in industrial landscapes.
