Justice Surya Kant Recommended as 53rd Chief Justice of India

New Delhi: Outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. The communication has been sent to the Centre, paving the way for Justice Kant’s appointment as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, effective 24 November 2025, following CJI Gavai’s retirement.

Appointment and Procedure

Under the Memorandum of Procedure for judicial appointments, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court deemed fit is elevated as CJI. The Law Minister seeks the recommendation of the incumbent Chief Justice about a month before retirement, ensuring a smooth and transparent transition in the top judicial office.

Judicial Career and Background

Born on 10 February 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant began his legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he was appointed as a judge in 2001. He later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. Upon assuming office, he will serve as CJI until 9 February 2027.
