Government Launches ₹600 Crore Kapas Kranti Mission to Boost Cotton Productivity
The Government of India has launched the ₹600 crore Kapas Kranti Mission, aimed at enhancing long-staple cotton cultivation and improving productivity across major cotton-growing states. Announced in Hyderabad by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, the mission focuses on modernizing cotton farming through scientific methods, high-density plantation (HDP), and technology-driven procurement systems.
The mission’s key goals include promoting HDP practices, improving farmer training, and deploying tech-enabled platforms for transparent cotton sales. Farmers will receive hands-on exposure to Maharashtra’s successful HDP model, especially from Akola, where yields have significantly risen through advanced agronomy and close plant spacing.
To streamline procurement, the government will soon launch the “Kapas Kisan App”, enabling farmers to book sales slots, avoid middlemen, and ensure fair pricing. Additionally, 122 procurement centres and 345 ginning units will be operational post-Diwali, with strong oversight by local committees.
Over the past decade, cotton procurement has increased from 173 lakh bales (₹24,825 crore) to 473 lakh bales (₹1.37 lakh crore), reflecting the government’s continued commitment to farmer welfare and agricultural modernization. The Kapas Kranti Mission reinforces India’s move toward self-reliance, transparency, and sustainable growth in the cotton sector.
