Maldives Enforces World’s First Generational Smoking Ban

In a historic global first, the Maldives has implemented a generational smoking ban, making it illegal for anyone born on or after 1 January 2007 to buy, use, or be sold tobacco products. The law, effective 1 November 2025, marks a groundbreaking step in global public health policy.

The ban covers all forms of tobacco and extends to both citizens and tourists. Retailers are required to verify buyers’ ages, with violators facing fines up to 50,000 Maldivian rufiyaa ($3,200). In addition, vaping and e-cigarettes are completely banned for all age groups, with possession or use punishable by a 5,000 rufiyaa ($320) fine.

This bold initiative positions the Maldives as the only country in the world with an active generational ban, surpassing earlier efforts by New Zealand (repealed in 2023) and the UK, which is still debating similar legislation.

Through this move, the Maldives aims to build a tobacco-free generation, setting a precedent for nations striving toward stronger, long-term public health protection.
