Mass cancellations Hit Maldives: Tourism tumble over 10,500 Hotel Bookings canceled by Indian tourists

India-Maldives Tensions Escalate: Thousands Cancel Travel Plans Following Abusive Remark

The tourism industry and diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives have been severely impacted after a massive cancellation of travel plans by Indian tourists, totaling over 10,500 hotel bookings and 5,520 flight tickets. These cancellations are in direct response to derogatory comments by Maldivian officials towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian community, significantly affecting Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration and its “India Out” campaign.

The situation escalated following disparaging remarks by three Deputy Ministers from the Maldives’ Ministry of Youth Affairs post Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. The adverse comments rapidly circulated on social media, leading to a boycott of the Maldives as a travel destination by Indian tourists

The Maldivian government responded by suspending the ministers involved and advocating for responsible free speech. Despite these measures, the controversy has heightened diplomatic tensions, especially as President Muizzu is due for a key diplomatic visit to China amidst calls for reduced Indian military presence in the Maldives.

On a brighter note, Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Lakshadweep has been spotlighted as a success, promoting the islands’ cultural and natural beauty. His activities and the subsequent support from Home Minister Amit Shah underscore the potential of Lakshadweep as a global tourist destination. Additionally, Modi’s advocacy for the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative during his visit reflects his broader aim to boost domestic tourism and celebrate India’s diverse culture and destinations. This move is expected to encourage Indians to explore and take pride in their country’s rich offerings.
