National Initiative on Water Security Launched to Boost Rural Sustainability

The Government of India has launched the National Initiative on Water Security, a major programme aimed at strengthening water conservation and ensuring sustainable water use in rural areas. Jointly introduced by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, the initiative integrates water management with rural employment schemes.

Under the plan, 65% of MGNREGA funds will be allocated to water projects in critical regions, and 40% in semi-critical areas. The focus is on activities like rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, watershed development, and sustainable irrigation to improve water availability for agriculture, livestock, and communities.

The initiative not only enhances agricultural productivity but also benefits future generations, wildlife, and the environment, reflecting the government’s long-term vision for rural development and ecological balance.
