The Government of India has launched the Notary Portal to digitise and streamline services under the Notaries Act, 1952 and Notaries Rules, 1956. This single online platform connects Central Government-appointed notaries with authorities, enabling faceless, paperless, and transparent operations.
Key services include online appointment applications, eligibility verification, issuance and renewal of digital Certificates of Practice, changes in practice areas, and annual return submissions. By July 2025, over 34,900 certificates had been digitally issued, reflecting rapid adoption.
Under the Act, notaries — appointed by the Central or State Governments — authenticate documents, administer oaths, prepare deeds, and certify powers of attorney, ensuring legal authenticity in transactions. Strict rules govern their appointment, with detailed registers maintained for transparency.
The law also allows reciprocal recognition of foreign notarial acts, boosting cross-border legal cooperation. With the Notary Portal, India takes a major step toward efficiency, integrity, and ease in its notarial system.
