India marks the 170th anniversary of the Santhal Hul in 2025 — a major tribal uprising that began in 1855 against British colonial rule. Celebrated as Hul Diwas every June 30 in Jharkhand, the rebellion was led by Santhal brothers Sidhu and Kanhu, who united tribal communities against exploitative British policies and local zamindars.
The rebellion, born from broken promises of land and growing oppression in the Damin-i-Koh region, lasted until 1856. Though eventually crushed, it laid the foundation for future uprisings like the 1857 revolt and highlighted the resilience and rights of tribal communities.
The Santhals, now among India’s largest tribal groups, remember this movement as a proud symbol of unity and resistance — making Santhal Hul a defining chapter in India’s struggle for justice.
