India Crosses 6 Crore Screenings Under National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission

India has reached a significant public health milestone by completing 6 crore screenings under the National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission, a flagship initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st July 2023 in Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh. The mission, which primarily targets tribal and underserved populations, aims to eliminate sickle cell anemia as a public health issue by 2047.

So far, the mission has identified 2.15 lakh patients and 16.7 lakh carriers of the hereditary blood disorder. Over 2.6 crore health cards have been distributed, and Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) kits are being used for quick diagnosis.

States like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, and Uttarakhand are leading in implementation. With 1 crore screenings remaining, the mission now focuses on ensuring follow-up care, genetic counselling, and integration with tribal health programs.

This milestone marks a powerful step toward achieving health equity and securing a healthier future for India’s vulnerable communities.
