Sir Creek Dispute Reignites After Rajnath Singh’s Strong Warning to Pakistan

The Sir Creek dispute between India and Pakistan has resurfaced after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh issued a stern warning, saying any hostile action in the region would receive a “resounding and decisive response.”

Sir Creek, a 96-km tidal estuary in the Rann of Kutch, separates Gujarat (India) and Sindh (Pakistan). The disagreement dates back to the 1914 Bombay Government Resolution, with Pakistan claiming the boundary lies along the eastern bank, while India maintains it follows the thalweg (mid-channel) principle.

The dispute is significant due to its implications for security, fishing rights, and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) access—an area rich in oil, gas, and marine resources. Both nations maintain active naval and coast guard patrols in this sensitive zone.

Singh’s warning in October 2025 reflects a tougher Indian stance amid reports of Pakistani activity near the estuary, emphasizing that any intrusion will meet a firm response. The move also highlights Sir Creek’s growing importance in regional strategy and India’s commitment to securing its maritime borders.
