Supreme Court Admits Google’s Appeal in Android Antitrust Case

The Supreme Court of India has admitted an appeal by Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, against a National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) ruling that upheld key findings of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) on abuse of dominance in the Android ecosystem. The Court has also admitted related petitions from the CCI and the Alliance Digital India Foundation (ADIF), with hearings set for November 2025.

The CCI began investigating Google in 2020 over complaints from developers that it forced use of the Google Play Billing System, charged commissions of 15–30%, and mandated pre-installation of its apps. It fined Google ₹936.44 crore and ordered changes to payment and app policies. NCLAT later upheld the abuse finding but cut the fine to ₹216.69 crore, modifying some remedies.

Google defends its practices as pro-user and industry standard, while ADIF and the CCI seek stronger measures to ensure fair competition. The Supreme Court’s decision could reshape India’s digital market, affecting millions of Android users and setting a precedent for global tech regulation.
