TSDCA seizes drugs misleading consumers

Hyderabad: Eight Ayurvedic medicines and one allopathic drug were seized by the Telangana State Drug Control Administration (TSDCA) drug inspectors in regard to the false advertisements of such medicines to cure different medical illnesses.

  1. Sampoorn Maharog’s eight Ayurvedic drugs are Khadirarishta, which is used for treating tumors; Ekangveer Ras, which is used for treating paralysis; Simhadi Guggulu, which is used for treating rheumatism and tumour; Stonil 24 Tablets, which is used for treating kidney stones; Ayur Phala Neem Leaf Powder claiming to treat fever.

The TSDCA made it clear that these kinds of advertisement are in violation with the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, is concerned with the restriction of advertisement of certain drugs and other treatments for treatment of certain diseases and disorders.

In another raid, the TSDCA captured the same overpriced antibiotic ointment ‘Mupima Ointment 5gm’ (Muprim Ointment IP2 percent) from Beeramguda, Ameenpur mandal at Sangareddy district on Saturday.

The product Mupirocin Ointment (trade name ‘Mupima Ointment 5gm’) falls under the price control of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013 and the price of the product will be in accordance with the ‘Ceiling Price’ fixed by National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the Government of India.

The product, Keesar, made by Maathrey Pharmaceuticals, Hyderabad, an NPPA-approved generic drug, has MRP of Rs 189 for 5 gm of pack whereas the NPPA ceiling price for 5 gm of the same product is Rs 101.45. The price of the product was overcharged by the firm 75.40 rupees more, a breach of Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, as per a DCA press release.
