Veteran Broadcaster Devalla Balakrishna Passes Away at 91

Hyderabad, India – March 6, 2025: Renowned broadcaster and veteran media personality Devalla Balakrishna passed away on March 6, 2025, at 12:30 PM. Born on September 6, 1933, his demise at the age of 91 marks the end of an illustrious career that significantly shaped the landscape of Indian radio and television journalism.

Devalla Balakrishna embarked on his broadcasting journey in 1959 as a Transmission Executive at All India Radio (AIR) Hyderabad. His exceptional dedication and expertise led to his promotion as Program Executive in 1962. Over the decades, he played a pivotal role in the evolution of Indian media, serving in multiple capacities and contributing immensely to the field of communication.

In 1978, he assumed the role of Station Director, overseeing operations in key locations such as Kadapa, Visakhapatnam, and Sikkim. His leadership and forward-thinking approach contributed significantly to the growth and modernization of regional broadcasting.

Balakrishna reached the pinnacle of his career in 1988 when he was appointed Director General of Doordarshan in Hyderabad, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. Under his stewardship, Doordarshan saw remarkable advancements in programming, outreach, and content development, further cementing its position as a leading source of information and entertainment in India.

Beyond his contributions to broadcasting, Balakrishna was closely associated with legendary actor and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. He played a crucial role in conducting several high-profile interviews with the esteemed leader during his tenure, both at the state and central levels, for All India Radio and Doordarshan.

His passing is a profound loss to the media fraternity. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of journalists and broadcasters. The cremation is scheduled for today, March 7, 2025.
