Why is Aligarh Known as the City of Locks?

Aligarh, a prominent city in Uttar Pradesh, is widely known as the “City of Locks” (Tala Nagri) due to its long-standing association with lock manufacturing. For over a century, the city has been a major hub for producing durable, affordable, and reliable locks that are used across India and exported worldwide.

The lock industry in Aligarh began in the late 19th century when modern lock-making techniques were introduced. Over time, local artisans mastered the craft and established thousands of small and large manufacturing units, making lock production a key driver of the city’s economy and employment.

Today, Aligarh produces a wide range of security products, including padlocks, door locks, and advanced locking systems. The city’s lock industry has earned international recognition, with products reaching markets in several countries.

Beyond its industrial significance, lock-making has become an integral part of Aligarh’s cultural identity. The traditional craftsmanship has been passed down through generations and has also been recognized under the government’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. Apart from its lock industry, Aligarh is also renowned for Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), one of India’s leading educational institutions.
